This allowed the proprietor to collect some Japanese pieces from the West. The metal inlay craft can be traced back over 2,000 years to Damascus, the capital of Syria. In the early eighth century, it was introduced to the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) by the Moors. Around the same time, it also traveled to Japan via the Silk Road. Using iron or copper alloy as the base, fine lines are etched onto the surface. Then, thin sheets of real gold and silver are used to create patterns, which are hammered and inlaid.
