This piece is finished through a meticulous process: Shigaraki clay is shaped on the wheel, the surface of the bowl is carved, the pattern is incised, it undergoes bisque firing, white clay is inlaid into the patterned areas and excess is wiped away, an interior celadon glaze is applied, and finally, it is fired at high temperature. Its moderate thickness makes it comfortable to hold, and the rim is smooth to the touch. Beautiful crackles (kannyu) adorn the interior. Because the clay for the bowl and the clay inlaid into the pattern are different types, their shrinkage rates during firing vary. This can sometimes lead to the white clay not adhering perfectly in the recessed areas, a challenge that required numerous trials and considerable time to perfect. The deep green hue enhances the appearance of your dishes and complements both Japanese and Western table settings.
