Bonsai Care Sageretia thea thrives in sunny environments. Most fruiting bonsai require ample sunlight for proper color development. Insufficient light can lead to faded colors or fruit drop. During the fruit development stage, a moderate application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer can enhance fruit coloration. An excess of fruit can deplete nutrients, resulting in uneven or smaller fruit. Strategic thinning of fruit can improve the overall quality of the harvest. Timely leaf pruning encourages the appearance of fruit when new shoots emerge. Watering Method The principle for watering is to water when the soil feels dry to the touch. When the surface of the soil appears slightly dry, or the top layer of the soil lightens in color, it is time to water thoroughly. Each watering should be complete, until water drains from the bottom of the pot, ensuring the entire soil mass is moistened. Avoid watering only the surface, which can lead to root dehydration. This practice helps the plant balance water and air, promoting healthy growth. Do not wait until the soil is excessively dry to water. Due to the small and shallow pot, the soil can dry out quickly, so daily monitoring of moisture loss is essential. During the hot summer months, a mister can be used to spray the branches and leaves, maintaining humidity. Sageretia thea requires sufficient moisture during its fruiting period, but overwatering, which leads to excessively moist soil, must be avoided. Overly wet soil can cause oxygen deficiency, leading to root rot and wilting. In autumn and winter, the plant's growth slows down, and watering frequency should be reduced accordingly. Allowing the plant to be exposed to rain outdoors can contribute to healthier growth. During the bonsai cultivation process, moderate pruning and shaping are performed.
