Atlas is a Titan in Greek mythology. After the Titans were defeated in their rebellion against the Olympian gods, Zeus condemned Atlas to eternally support the heavens. In later artistic representations, the heavens gradually became depicted as a giant sphere, giving rise to the familiar image of Atlas “carrying the world.” In this piece, natural turquoise represents the world borne by Atlas, while the figure is sculpted in silver in a twisted, tense posture under its weight.
