Koide Merchants Japanese merchants of the era jointly constructed a series of shop houses along Suehirocho Ginza. Designed by Japanese technician Umezawa Sutegoro, construction began in January 1931 and officially commenced on December 14th of the same year. Completed the following October, it marked the first street in Tainan City to be developed with comprehensive urban planning. Koide Merchants was completed during this period, with a height second only to the contemporaneous Hayashi Department Store. It primarily sold sporting goods and imported items, owned by Koide Hyozaemon. The beautiful facade was bombed during World War II, severely damaging the roof. Today, only a faint outline and the flagpole remain, allowing posterity to reflect on its former glory. Suggested ways to use this architectural postcard: 1.
