Excerpt from the new preface:
"Then, what about yourself?
You
Are not so great that you are
The mother's child + the son's father + the friend's confidant + the wife's husband + the superior's subordinate, the subordinate's superior + the arbiter of right and wrong + the peacemaker in quarrels + the confidant of troubles + the emotional blackmailer and victim
As small as
A sigh of relief in the gaps of human relationships
You
Are the sum of your studies, career, lover, family, previous generation, next generation, ID card, credit card, savings, and debts
Yet those people, those things, those matters do not entirely equal
You
So, after everything is gone, how will you face yourself?
What are you then?
If I question you like this,
Please remember to retort:
The world
Having added you
Then subtracting you
Does not equal the original
World
So, even if you have nothing left, you still have yourself.
And you are yourself."
This book is a new edition of "Then, What About Yourself?", with a newly added preface.
"Then, what about yourself?" Hearing this seemingly nonsensical question, how would you respond?
Would you answer: "Myself what? What aspect of myself are you asking about?"
And then the questioner would ask:
"Anything is fine, as long as it's about yourself."
When you see a house, do you think of it as a place that shelters you and your loved ones, a place for intimate living, or a place that traps you beneath the roof?
"Then, What About Yourself?" is a question that underpins the entire book, prompting you to reflect on yourself.
As people gradually grow older, their identities and roles multiply. The self, connected by a string of relationships, is forced or willing to become increasingly blurred, until one day, looking back, one discovers they are merely a shadow cast on the ground, and the once tangible self is no longer clear.
As Lin Xi asks in the preface, "What about your own hobbies? Your hobby is loving this family. If family members have their own preferences, for the sake of getting along, would you also learn to love what they love, and say you love it?
If his happiness makes you happy? Then your own beliefs, your values, your sense of right and wrong, your private world are all collectivized. What about your personality? A person without a self, even with great achievements for those around them, doesn't that person become a mere appendage to someone else's life? If the relationship sours, you become nothing. A healthy relationship can also involve each person pursuing their own interests without conflict, and then living out their true selves. Losing oneself is just a pit. You grind yourself into malleable clay and pour it in to achieve a sense of completeness. If this is you, I can only offer infinite blessings."
The self and others, and those you care about, can actually coexist. When did we forget this?
