Damascening is the art of inlaying different metals into one another (typically gold or silver into a dark oxidized steel background), producing intricate patterns similar to *niello*. The English term comes from the resemblance of the patterns to the rich brocade patterns found in damask silk. The technique is still practiced in cities with a long history of damascening, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Toledo, Spain, Eibar in the Basque Country, and Kyoto, Japan. Vintage jewelry will invariably show signs of its age, but this does not affect its functionality or aesthetic appeal when worn.
