This bracelet showcases a multitude of inlaid Japanese totems, a testament to the intricate craftsmanship involved. Featuring scenes of Mount Fuji, temples, pastoral landscapes, chrysanthemums, irises, and small boats, this delicate bracelet tells a rich story of Japan's scenic beauty.
▰▰▰▰▰▰AMITA▰▰▰▰▰▰
Founded in Kobe in 1932, Amita re-established its Damascene factory in Kyoto in 1946, following World War II. In 1952, the Japanese government designated Amita Damascene Co., Ltd. as an official export retailer (duty-free shop). The company produced numerous items for export to the West, allowing the curator to acquire some Japanese pieces from Western collections.
The art of metal inlay traces its origins back over 2,000 years to Damascus, the capital of Syria. It later arrived on the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the early eighth century with the Moorish invasion and simultaneously entered Japan via the Silk Road.
The process involves creating fine incisions on a base metal, typically iron or a copper alloy. Thin sheets of pure gold and silver are then meticulously hammered into these incisions to form patterns. Lacquer is applied and fired to prevent oxidation and corrosion of the base metal. The piece is then polished, further refined with intricate micro-engraving techniques, and finally set into jewelry.
