About Imari Ware Originating from Saga Prefecture, Arita is recognized as the birthplace of Japanese ceramics. In the 1600s, at Okawachiyama in Imari, the Saga Domain established an imperial kiln to produce tribute ware for Shoguns, nobles, and prominent families, thus giving rise to Imari-Oppa Goma-yaki. At the time, to prevent the leakage of firing techniques, the kiln was strategically built in a difficult-to-access location. The artisans, techniques, and materials were all cutting-edge, resulting in pottery of the highest quality, exclusively for nobles and the Emperor, earning it the title "Home of the Secret Kiln."
