Material Selection The cowhide currently used by "Tangent Linear" is all A-grade, high-fat, vegetable-tanned leather from Italy. As it is a natural material, and the tannery uses vegetable tanning methods that cause minimal damage to the leather, the surface inevitably has a small number of "scars," "wrinkles," and "veins." We do our best to avoid these during the cutting process, or place them on less visible or non-load-bearing parts of the product. 2. Hand-Stitched Seams We do not use sewing machines to craft our products; all items are meticulously hand-stitched. Before stitching, special diamond chisels are used to punch stitch holes in the leather, which is how we achieve the beautiful wavy stitch effect, distinct from machine stitching. Although this significantly increases production time, it is a crucial step where leather artisans imbue the piece with soul and a warm, tactile feel. 3. Hand-Burnished Edges Before finishing, the edges of the leather are burnished and sealed. This is done to ensure the edges appear smooth, rounded, and natural. "Tangent Linear" has its own unique edge-finishing method. First, sandpaper is used to repeatedly smooth the sharp edges. Then, a layer of edge sealant is applied to make the edges appear even, a process repeated 2-3 times. Finally, a layer of edge wax is applied, and the edges are repeatedly polished with a burnishing tool until they achieve a smooth finish. 4. Hand-Dyed Leather For our hand-dyed products, "Tangent Linear" currently uses imported Fiebing's leather alcohol dyes from the United States. To achieve even and natural coloration, we begin by dampening the leather surface with water. Then, using a sponge, we apply the dye repeatedly, layer by layer, from light to deep, until the desired color is achieved. After drying, a color sealant is applied to enhance colorfastness. We also apply water to the surface of the leather to wipe away any surface dust and further even out the color. As the dyeing process is entirely by hand, there are subtle variations in color between each bag, making every piece unique.
