Its surface has a warm, matte finish that will become more lustrous with wear, developing a patina.** This is made by repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, mixing with water, allowing it to settle, and then collecting the upper "turbid liquid." This is then allowed to settle again (the water-milling purification process). The bottom cinnabar mud is air-dried and then pressed using traditional methods. Uneven, fine mineral flecks can still be seen on the internal cross-section. **「Emperor Sand」** **A richer, brighter red with higher hardness.** This is produced through multiple stages of purification from raw cinnabar ore, including crushing, grinding, magnetic separation, water-milling, and high polishing, followed by traditional pressing. Emperor Sand has almost no visible mineral flecks on the surface, but they are present internally. The character "丹" is essentially "井" with a dot in the middle, signifying something extracted from a mine. This substance is cinnabar. Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dānshā) became known as "朱砂" (zhūshā). "丹" and "朱" describe the color, while "砂" describes the shape, referring to irregularly shaped mineral particles. Cinnabar's color is exceptionally enduring. Chinese calligraphy and painting are referred to as "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" signifies cinnabar. It is also an essential component of "八宝印泥" (bābǎo yìnní), or the "Eight Treasures Ink Pad," whose main ingredient is cinnabar.
