About Wood Firing "Wood firing" is a traditional kiln method that reaches temperatures above 1200 degrees Celsius using firewood. The natural "fire marks" left directly on the clay body by the wood fire, and the ash naturally falling from the burning wood, result in a warm, rich, and varied coloration that cannot be achieved with electric or gas kilns. Compared to ordinary electric and gas kilns, the wood firing process—from stacking the kiln, ignition, sealing the kiln, to cooling—takes approximately 8 to 10 days. Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, along with factors such as humidity, the dryness of the wood, the rate of wood stoking, and the placement within the kiln, can all influence the success or failure of a piece, leading to a higher damage rate. Experienced wood firing artisans carefully consider the airflow dynamics within the kiln when stacking. They meticulously plan the placement of pieces based on their size, estimate the rise of the flame path, determine how and when to stoke wood and charcoal, and control the precise heat level. Each piece is stamped with the Mingya Kiln seal or signed by the artist (Master Tsai Rong-Tsung or Master Chung Hsuan-Hui). 4. Before first use, please clean with a sponge, mild detergent, and water.
