Some also call it "Fan Sparrow" or "Ji Gong." Its unique appearance and color are incredibly appealing, and caring for the Hawk-wing is not difficult at all. It's a succulent potted plant truly worth owning! The Hawk-wing belongs to the Kalanchoe genus in the Crassulaceae family. Its scientific name is Kalanchoe rhombopilosa, and its English name is "Pies from Heaven." It's native to Madagascar. In Taiwan, we've given it the very fitting nickname "Chocolate Chip" because of its appearance – isn't it cute! The Hawk-wing is quite distinctive in appearance, with grayish-white leaves shaped like fans. The tips are adorned with small, painted brown spots, which become more prominent with more sun exposure. Each leaf is about 3 cm in size, and the mature plant can reach about 30 cm in height. The Hawk-wing grows very, very slowly. It's so slow that you might sometimes wonder, "Is it even growing?" after two years of cultivation, a growth of about 10 cm and the addition of 8-10 leaves is considered very healthy and normal. So, with a Hawk-wing, take your time to appreciate its beauty and don't rush its growth! | Care Guide | Succulents in the Kalanchoe genus are not particularly difficult to grow. They prefer bright, sunny locations and have no issues with surviving summers in Taiwan; they will continue to grow well during this season. Overseas care guides mention that Kalanchoes are summer-dormant, which is because they can thrive in temperatures below 35°C. However, winters abroad involve snow, and Kalanchoes do not easily survive such conditions (referring to snowy winters). In Taiwan, we don't have to worry about sub-zero temperatures, so they grow well year-round. There's no need to restrict watering during specific seasons; normal watering is sufficient. "Normal watering" means that in a well-ventilated, sunny environment, you can water once a week, ensuring the entire soil is moistened each time. Fertilizing with slow-release fertilizer in spring and autumn can also help the Hawk-wing's leaves become plumper. If you're growing it indoors with less sunlight and ventilation, we suggest poking the soil with a bamboo skewer.
