It has a flattened spherical shape with a dark green body. When grown well, the surface can appear slightly glossy. Its spines are slightly curved and adhere to the body's surface. It produces white flowers. In Japan, it's called 'Seru Maru'. The original wild species of Gymnocalycium denudatum are found in southern Brazil and northern Uruguay in South America. Gymnocalycium denudatum itself is a highly variable species and has been cultivated for many years, being one of the earliest Gymnocalycium species discovered. 'Ocean King Maru' is a horticultural variant of Gymnocalycium denudatum, specifically 'datum guayensis'. 'Ocean King Maru' is a name given by the Japanese. Young plants tend to be more rounded, while mature plants are flattened. The spines are curved and stick to the surface of the body. The surface is a vibrant green and glossy. It carries the genes of 'Hihon Maru' (Gymnocalycium anisitsii), making its appearance similar, and can be considered an "upgraded version" of 'Hihon Maru'. 'Ocean King Maru' typically has fewer ribs, usually 5 to 8. The tubercles are smooth and flat. The spines radiate outwards, are ivory or creamy yellow, usually 3-5 in number, and 1.5 to 2 cm long. They look like long-legged spiders clinging to the body, hence the nickname "spider cactus." It usually flowers in spring and summer. The flowers are a bright, pure white, about 5 cm long and 7 cm wide. Many current 'Ocean King Maru' specimens show pink hues, or pink buds that open white, or variations in petal color, likely due to hybridization and selective breeding. | Environment | Prefers environments with ample sunlight and warmth. It is heat and sun-tolerant; in summer, it can be grown without shade. Its weakness is intolerance to cold; the overwintering temperature in winter should be above 0°C (when kept dry). Cold protection measures are necessary in winter. It is highly adaptable to its environment. | Soil | Prefers loose, well-draining sandy loam. Any soil with sufficient nutrients, good aeration, and fast drainage will suffice. The designer uses a specially formulated succulent mix for planting, so you generally don't need to worry about it. | Sunlight | Cacti should be placed in a location with abundant sunlight. Expose them to as much sun as possible. Only with sufficient sunlight will they grow vigorously and flower frequently. Insufficient sunlight can lead to etiolation (stretching). | Watering | Cacti are succulents that store a large amount of water internally. They do not have high water requirements. Follow the principle of "water only when the soil is dry." During the winter dormancy period, reduce or stop watering. | Flowering | In terms of flowering, 'Ocean King Maru' is similar to 'Hihon Maru'. Small plants with a diameter of about 3 cm will begin to flower. With proper care and sufficient sunlight, they can bloom repeatedly several times a year. The larger the plant, the more flowers it will produce. Mature plants often have several flowers blooming simultaneously, covering the entire body, making it a spectacular sight where only flowers are visible.
