The natural "fire marks" left by the flames directly on the ceramic body, along with the ash naturally falling from the burning wood, imbue the pieces with a warm, rich texture and diverse color variations—a realm unattainable by electric or gas kilns. Compared to conventional electric and gas kilns, the entire wood-firing process, from stacking the kiln, ignition, sealing, to cooling, takes approximately 8 to 10 days. Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, coupled with factors such as humidity, wood dryness, the speed of stoking, and kiln placement, can all influence the success or failure of a piece, leading to a higher damage rate. Experienced wood-firing artisans carefully consider kiln airflow when stacking, planning the placement of pieces of varying sizes, estimating flame paths, determining the timing and amount of wood and charcoal added, and controlling the firing temperature.
