I remember when I was meditating at Osho's commune, I worked in the music department, as the lead singer. Every Friday, there was a celebration for disciples. Musicians from all over the world were invited. We'd practice for two hours in the afternoon and then perform live in the evening. Our music department had a leader who organized everything, including the songs, the musicians, and the entire musical arrangement. Since the Osho community was a place with a lot of comings and goings, new people arrived and others left every day. So, the musicians collaborating each time were never fixed. I only became the lead singer when I was there; if I wasn't, someone else would take over. Therefore, every time new musicians joined the rehearsal, you had to be incredibly present! And you had to adapt quickly, otherwise, you'd be kicked out. So, only the top-tier musicians would come, those who could perform immediately. After all, we only had two hours of practice, and we had to sing 14 to 16 songs in the evening! And these songs were meant to help people become disciples, so they had to be performed with great stillness. Thus, the musicians who came had a certain standard. Those who weren't ready, even if they got the opportunity to join the rehearsal, would be asked to leave after just two or three songs. If you weren't present enough, and not skilled or professional enough, you would disrupt the entire energy and harmony. It was very intense, allowing no room for error, as it was a live performance. And if you made a mistake, everyone would be disturbed, including those receiving enlightenment at that moment. So, it was very sacred! It was also a meditation for all the performers and musicians. We performers also completed this disciple celebration in meditation. It’s another world! So, as I said, if you weren't ready, you couldn't participate in this performance. Even if a musician was very strong, but had a huge ego, wanting only to perform rather than blend in, they would also be asked to leave! After all, this wasn't a solo performance, but a celebration to help others connect with their inner selves! Too much ego would be disruptive. Usually, for such individuals, we'd ask them to meditate for two or three months first, and after their minds relaxed and were no longer so heavy, we'd invite them to perform again.
