[What is Botanical Dyeing?] Botanical dyeing is a technique that extracts dyes from plants such as flowers, leaves, roots, stems, trees, bark, and fruits. A protein-based adhesive is applied to the fabric to ensure even absorption of the natural dye. Then, a small amount of chemical dye is added to enhance colorfastness (resistance to fading from light, sweat, and washing, and to stabilize the pigments) without the need for a mordant, resulting in beautiful natural colors on the fabric. Natural dyes are not as simple as chemical ones. A single color contains multiple pigments, and the interplay of weak and strong pigments creates a soft, diffused light that is pleasing to the eye.
