Limited Edition Air Plant Terrarium - Druid Yellow Mutants, Clumped! With Multiple Offsets. Only Two Available In Stock.
Paired with the colorful Moai stone planter as a hair accessory, its messy hair resembles an unkempt bird's nest – definitely needs a salon visit!
With a wide variety of species, air plants don't require soil and are incredibly easy to care for, surviving on moisture absorption. They are perfect for those with a less hands-on approach to plant care! They also make for fantastic decorative pieces.
This particular air plant species is the - Druid Yellow Mutants, Clumped (XL).
If you find it too dense, you can separate it into several plants. Please note that only larger specimens can be divided; smaller offsets should remain with the mother plant to absorb nutrients and grow quickly!
These charming little mutants, with their ever-changing appearances, are a must-have for air plant enthusiasts. The "Druid" variety is a particularly representative species, known for its ease of cultivation and prolific production of pups, forming impressive clumps. This batch features the "Druid Yellow Mutants" in a clump, showcasing a uniquely lovely yellow hue!
The "Mutants" are a species with numerous individual plants. Their small size means they don't take up much space, and their charm often makes them favored residents in collectors' homes. Among the larger family of "Mutants," the Druid stands out with its unique characteristic: it's the only species where the leaves develop a bright yellow "marriage color" when blooming. Additionally, its flowers are white and tubular, unlike other "Mutants" that turn reddish and bloom with purple, tubular flowers.
Chinese Name: Air Plant - Druid Mutant (also known as White Flower Mutant)
Scientific Name: Tillandsia ionantha Druid
Origin: Mexico, Central America
The "Mutants" are a species with numerous individual plants. Their small size means they don't take up much space, and their charm and varied appearances make them a must-have for air plant enthusiasts.
The "Mutant" exhibits a rosette pattern of green leaves, with leaf shapes being strap-like and radiating outwards. Different varieties bloom in different seasons, and prior to flowering, the leaves display distinct marriage colors depending on the species and care environment.
Once mature, they bloom once a year. After flowering, the leaves gradually return to their original color and produce pups.
(Cultivation Methods for the "Mutant" Series)
The "Mutant" series are all beginner-friendly varieties. With so many similar-looking types, it can be difficult to distinguish them by appearance alone. Their cultivation methods are generally the same: they are drought-tolerant yet enjoy watering, thrive in good ventilation, and benefit from airflow at their base. When watering, mist the entire plant. Fertilize weekly with a liquid fertilizer diluted 1,000 times. Avoid prolonged rain exposure, though occasional sprinkles are fine. Leaf tips may dry out when lacking water. They prefer at least half a day's sun, with shade directly overhead. Insufficient light can lead to dull marriage colors. They clump very readily. If you intend to grow them as a clump, consider trimming the old roots. When clumped, ensure good ventilation. Carefully remove any dead leaves. Hanging is recommended during this phase. Assess the mother plant's condition to determine if pups should be separated. Too many pups can increase the risk of rot if ventilation is inadequate.
Water
Winter: Infrequent watering (every 4 days to a week). Summer: Depending on the heat (approximately once every 1-2 days).
Environment
Crucially, place in a well-ventilated environment to allow excess moisture to dissipate after watering. If placed on a balcony, avoid areas directly in the path of air conditioner exhaust.
Sunlight
Half a day of bright, indirect sunlight is ideal.
Propagation
Each air plant blooms only once in its lifetime. After blooming, it continues its life by producing pups at the base or on the flower stalk. The mother plant gradually ages as the pups grow.
Important Notes:
If placing indoors, ensure it is not in an overly hot and stuffy area. Watering should be done with a mist spray, just enough to moisten the surface, or place the plant in a well-ventilated area after watering to help dissipate excess moisture. If placed outdoors, it is recommended to protect the plant from rain during specific weather conditions such as cold snaps, typhoons, or thunderstorms, especially for less robust or sensitive varieties.
⭕️ Air Plant Fun Facts
The roots of air plants are exposed to the air and primarily serve to anchor the plant. Tiny hairs on the leaves absorb water, and scale-like structures on the leaf surfaces take in moisture from rain or the air – these are the true organs for absorbing water and nutrients.
⭕️ Cultivation Methods
They can be attached to driftwood, rocks, placed in shells, planters, and more as decorative elements. No soil is required, and it's crucial to prevent water from pooling around the roots. The roots only serve for fixation; the plant can survive even without them.
⭕️ Daily Care
Due to their unique structure, these plants naturally absorb moisture from the air. Therefore, misting them every two to three days is usually sufficient (in summer, adjust frequency to about once every 1-2 days depending on the temperature, ensuring the entire plant is moistened but avoiding water accumulation in the core). Once a month, a diluted liquid fertilizer spray can provide additional nutrients for robust growth!
