It originates from the "Ganges River" in the holy city of Varanasi, crafted by the skillful hands of women in the surrounding households. https://tramper.tw/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/32492823977_1c5577be06_c.jpg The Ganges River flows through northern India, with a total length of 2,510 kilometers, which is nearly two and a half times the length of Taiwan. This illustrates its astonishingly abundant water volume. https://tramper.tw/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/20190226-dsc03345_48687167771_o-1024x683.jpg The Ganges is also a "holy river of Hinduism." Every Hindu wishes to bathe in the Ganges at least once in their lifetime. Whether it involves a three-day, three-night train journey or a bus ride without air conditioning, it's all worthwhile. This is because bathing in the Ganges water can cleanse a lifetime of sins. Scattering the ashes of the deceased into the river can also help them transcend worldly troubles and attain a better afterlife. https://tramper.tw/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/53685687_833892756989201_5962743663002910720_o-1024x576.jpg ▲ Tourist Itinerary - We are currently enjoying a leisurely ride on a small human-powered boat on the Ganges. The Ganges itself is truly magnificent, wide and long, stretching from the left to the right of our vision, with no end in sight. The turbidity of the water prevented us from seeing clearly into its depths. People of all ages, children and adults alike, were laughing in the river. Along the riverbanks were long flights of stairs, where people were squatting to wash clothes, dishes, and even themselves. https://tramper.tw/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/47381896442_6a08041e5f_c.jpg Many tourists also take human-powered boats to admire the Ganges scenery, creating a harmonious and interesting scene. After all, in Taiwan, we don't see a river that serves so many purposes for people simultaneously. What caught our attention the most were the numerous vendors selling various souvenirs along the riverbank stairs. And among them, one stall seemed to shine exceptionally brightly in our eyes! The reason is incredibly simple: the owner was a "woman." https://tramper.tw/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/2019-05-17-%E4%B8%8A%E5%8D%881.08.13-1024x631.jpg In India, the vast majority of vendors are men. The proportion of women walking on the streets is already small, and a woman owning a stall is a rare treasure. We rushed over to chat with her like we had discovered a gem, and unexpectedly uncovered a touching story from the past: Her name is Bhumika. Fifteen years ago, her husband had an affair and, using the excuse that "women are incapable of raising children alone," he sued for custody of their daughter. To prove herself to the judge, she set up a stall by the Ganges, supported by four poles and a canvas, selling her handmade crafts. Ultimately, she moved the judge and gained custody of her daughter. Those four poles have stood for 15 years. This Ganges ornament is a handicraft she taught herself initially, practicing diligently until she finally mastered it. Today, she travels nearly five hours each way daily, simply to ensure that these handicrafts, which have supported her resilience, can be seen by everyone. When you look around her stall, you'll see only male stall owners. They look down upon her, ostracizing her for being a woman who works publicly. But she is unafraid of their gossip and threats: "I believe in my own strength; it's not as little as they say," she stated firmly. https://tramper.tw/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/47381808132_c5c8b078c5_c.jpg ▲ Woven ornaments made by Bhumika We were deeply moved by her courage and told her we would carry her spirit forward. She gave each of us a big hug and some of her handmade necklaces and bracelets. But among her stall's offerings, the Ganges ornament remained our favorite. https://tramper.tw/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/32492813657_5169c53729_k-1024x683.jpg Upon returning to Taiwan from India, we immediately launched Tramper's first project – the "Bhumika Project." https://tramper.tw/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/20190715_%E5%B8%83%E9%9D%A1%E5%8D%A1%E8%A8%88%E7%95%AB%E6%A9%AB%E5%B9%85-1024x682.jpg At that time, besides brainstorming ways to pass on her story, we also hoped to do more to make the world a friendlier place. After a period of team brainstorming, the Bhumika Project was finally born! Under the "Bhumika Project," we referenced Taiwan's "Act of Gender Equality in Employment." We require Indian workshops collaborating with Tramper to implement equal employment rights in terms of "recruitment, salary, promotion and training, and working environment." We specifically prioritize and encourage women who are divorced, single mothers, widows, or have lost their support. All employers and employees who partner with us will sign a contract. We will explain each clause to them and reach a consensus, hoping to jointly promote the concept of gender equality and contribute our efforts in a country where gender equality concepts still need improvement. https://tramper.tw/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/%E8%9E%A2%E5%B9%95%E5%BF%AB%E7%85%A7-2020-06-19-%E4%B8%8A%E5%8D%882.36.09-1024x550.png Thanks to everyone's support, the "Bhumika Project" on [嘖嘖 crowdfunding platform] successfully met its goal on 2019/7/16, raising nearly 4 times the target amount! The Bhumika Project is currently still in progress, and it is precisely because of your support that we are motivated to do more, to join hands and make this world a little better.
