It's formed when crocidolite or blue asbestos is intensely replaced and cemented by silica hydrogel, resulting in colors like brown, ochre, yellow, and blue. This dense, hard, quartz rock possesses a silky luster. As its composition has transformed into quartz, its hardness increases to 7, and its specific gravity decreases to about 3.1, classifying it as a high-grade gemstone material. Pietersite is sometimes referred to as "Hawk's Eye" or "Falcon's Eye." Also known as Tiger's Eye, it's a gemstone exhibiting a cat's eye effect, typically in yellow-brown hues, with silky, fibrous bands within. Tiger's Eye is a variety of quartz that can be formed through the pseudomorphic replacement of crocidolite fibers by silica. The blue variant, resulting from an incomplete silicification process, is called "Hawk's Eye." Generally, it displays black and yellow tones resembling tiger stripes, or a blue, yellow, and black combination known as blue cat's eye. Often called a "noble gem," cat's eye is sometimes associated with energetic clearing properties. It is considered one of the world's five precious high-grade gemstones, alongside alexandrite. Cat's eye is primarily found in pneumatolytic hydrothermal deposits and pegmatite veins. Tiger's Eye is a variety of crocidolite. The quartz fibers in Tiger's Eye are shorter and arranged irregularly compared to those in crocidolite, forming arbitrary bands like patterns. The largest deposits of Tiger's Eye and crocidolite are located in the Transvaal Province of South Africa, with other sources in Brazil and Henan, China. Prices vary based on quality; specimens with flawless surfaces, clear and centered eye effects are considered top-grade.
