Kyoto Unsōdō Woodblock Landscape Postcard - Arashiyama Snowfall

Unsōdō was founded in the 24th year of Meiji (1891) as a publisher of art books utilizing the woodblock printing technique. The name originated from calligrapher and painter Tomioka Tessai, who bestowed upon it the inscription "Un, a fragrant herb." "Unsō" refers to the perennial herbaceous plant of the Rutaceae family, known in Chinese as "yún xiāng." The simplified Chinese character "芸" for "yún" is a homophone for the traditional character "藝" (art). In the 7th year of Taishō (1918), the Tokyo store was established, engaging in the publication of reference books and photo collections for kimono accessories and craft patterns, as well as the production of woodblock prints for appreciation. Today, only a handful of woodblock printing publishers remain in Kyoto and Tokyo.
