Starting from 1977, the five-cent coin was minted in brass-nickel alloy, marking the end of the "silver five-cent era." The coin design continued to feature a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, who was reigning at the time, on one side, while the other side displayed the denomination "Hong Kong Five Cents." Beginning in 1993, in preparation for Hong Kong's return to China, all coins were redesigned to feature the Bauhinia flower.
