HBT stands for Herringbone Twill, named for its distinctive pattern resembling the bones of a herring. Historically found in tailored wool suits, its advantages over denim—such as slower fading and less shrinkage— led it to gradually replace denim as the primary fabric for U.S. military uniforms.
