Han Chinese immigrants arrived here over 300 years ago. The terrain, surrounded by hills like petals encircling a flower's heart, led to the name "Huazhai" (Flower House) as they cultivated the land and built their homes in the area. After Taiwan's retrocession, it was renamed "Zhongshe" village due to its central location among the four villages on Wangan Island. Huazhai, also known as Zhongshe Village, is located in the central-west part of Wangan Island. A small hill between the two main settlements, Dahuazhai and Xiaohuazhai, is locally called "Huaxin" (Flower Heart), from which the village derives its ancient name. In 1946, it was renamed Zhongshe Village. The most famous ancient house is the Zeng family's ancestral home, recognizable by the character "曾" on its windows—a magnificent dwelling that stands as the most well-preserved in the settlement. The main gate features a "Reverse Swallow" architectural style, with a flat brick platform above the gate, often used for drying fish or peanuts. The bird-walk on the facade is adorned with Japanese-style 5x5 decorative tiles, exuding elegance and grandeur. Unlike most traditional Penghu houses built with coral stone, the Zeng family's ancestral home is constructed from basalt. The front windows are designed with a scholarly "book scroll" motif. The small hill behind the Zeng residence is the "Huaxin," the origin of the ancient place name "Huazhai." While formulating the ink, the coral stones of the ancient houses served as the inspiration for the color palette. The intention is to evoke a sense of serene comfort, reminiscent of deep grey stone layers that have settled over centuries, for users to experience as they write.
