The Treasure Box
Must we experience lows to truly appreciate the highs?
When was the last time someone expressed gratitude towards you?
Did you feel a sense of upliftment when you were appreciated,
realizing that you are more capable than you imagined?
And when was the last time you were grateful to someone else?
After recovering from an illness?
When you received a helping hand during difficult times?
The companionship and comfort of friends after a breakup?
Do you find yourself only starting to appreciate the things you take for granted
after experiencing some form of tragedy?
Stanford psychologist Irvin Yalom,
interviewed patients with only months left to live.
Their shared sentiment was:
"For the first time in my life, I feel truly alive,
because for the first time,
I understand the value of breathing."
In their past,
they were consumed by difficulties and lack.
Modern society is indeed lacking in gratitude.
We often feel we are fighting alone,
focused solely on "success" or "failure."
Beyond these,
we find little reason
to simply live with ease.
We don't even want to "face" tragedy;
we just want to "overcome" it.
We pray for our lives to be spared from disaster,
believing that a life without tragedy
is a successful one,
worthy of gratitude.
This gradually distorts our perspective, much like the "Ah Q mentality."
Those who focus on what they lack have a fleeting perception of love and joy.
Even with great fortune, they cannot feel it,
only pursuing momentary satisfactions,
be it wealth or achievement.
Starting today, take a moment to truly examine your day.
What do you possess effortlessly?
A walk with your dog,
a simple meal,
the ability to care for others?
Do we need a wake-up call, like a terminal diagnosis, to realize this?
Must we wait to see a rainbow before thanking God for the rain?
God does not ask us to avoid growth,
or to only be grateful for smooth sailing.
Instead, He desires us to be genuinely grateful and to fall in love with
each unique life journey,
each landscape of our lives,
whether in times of peak or trough.
We are so grateful to those who fill our stockings at Christmas. But why are we not grateful to God for giving us legs to put into our stockings?
