The 'Eagle Claw' (Haworthia cooperi var. obtusa) is a succulent in the Asphodeloideae family, known for its sharp, claw-shaped leaves. The leaf tips are densely arranged and feature small, raised white tubercles. It's shade-tolerant and drought-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for indoor decoration. The 'Eagle Claw' is quite similar to the hard-leaved Aloe aristata, sharing a robust, claw-like appearance. However, the 'Eagle Claw' appears less rigid and possesses a more vibrant green hue compared to the Aloe aristata.
It thrives in warm, dry conditions with ample sunlight but is susceptible to low temperatures and humidity. It is exceptionally easy to care for and can grow even with insufficient light. Avoid overwatering, as overly wet soil can lead to rot. During spring and autumn, increasing watering frequency moderately will promote rapid growth. In the intense heat of summer, it enters a semi-dormant state, requiring reduced watering. Watering should also be infrequent in winter, and the plant should be kept in a warm, south-facing indoor location.
Light
Prefers abundant indirect light. During the hot summer months, avoid direct sunlight and ensure good ventilation. Note that while it tolerates shade, it cannot survive without any light. Prolonged darkness will cause the plant to distort and etiolate, which takes a considerable amount of time to correct.
Temperature
Not cold-hardy. The optimal growing temperature is between 15-25°C. Avoid temperatures below 10°C. It enters dormancy when temperatures exceed 30°C.
Watering
Follow the principle of "water only when dry, and water thoroughly." Avoid waterlogging, which can cause root rot. Also, do not let it remain dry for extended periods, as this will cause the leaves to shrivel. During the growing seasons of spring and autumn, water thoroughly once it has dried out, approximately once a week. In summer, water lightly about every two weeks. In winter, water thoroughly once it has dried out. The actual watering frequency can be adjusted based on your growing environment.
Summer Dormancy
During summer dormancy, due to high temperatures, the plant's growth slows or stops. Lower leaves may occasionally dry out. Throughout the summer, keep the soil moderately dry. Provide a small amount of water around the edge of the pot each month. 'Eagle Claw' is very robust and rarely experiences crown rot. The key is to maintain the minimal moisture needed for slow or stopped root growth during dormancy, rather than ceasing watering entirely due to high temperatures, which can prolong its recovery. During dormancy, the plant may consume some moisture and nutrients from its leaves, leading to shriveling and wilting from the bottom up or across the entire plant. Due to slow growth and high temperatures in summer, significant growth is rarely observed on the leaves.
Propagation
Common methods include division, cuttings, and sowing. Division can be done during repotting, at any time of year, but is most common in April-May. Gently separate offsets from the mother plant and pot them directly. After potting, place the divided plant in a shaded area and control watering. Gradually increase light and watering once new roots have formed.
Flowering
The plant flowers in spring and summer, with racemose inflorescences. Cross-pollination between different plants of the same species or between related species is necessary. If the flower stalks are not pollinated, they can be pruned to prevent the plant from expending nutrients on the flower spikes.
📝 Key Takeaways: Shade-tolerant, drought-tolerant, prefers indirect light, ensure good ventilation, water only when dry, and water thoroughly. Approximately once a week.
