He served in the Imperial Painting Academy during the Xianfeng era (mid-19th century). He excelled at portraiture and was also skilled in painting flowers, birds, and landscapes. His reputation was very high, and Empress Dowager Cixi once bestowed upon him a plaque inscribed with "Master of Capturing Likeness" in her own hand. This painting is one section of the "Twelve Flower Deities."
