Xiangyunsha, a non-material cultural heritage, undergoes an additional process for its black iteration. Crafted from 100% mulberry silk power spun plain fabric, it is crisp, drapey, and possesses a refined texture. The process begins with repeated plant dyeing using *Shuliang* (a type of yam), initially yielding a front and back brown hue. This is followed by covering with river mud, which creates an AB-colored effect on both sides. The areas covered by river mud turn black, while the uncovered areas retain their brown color. Once the river mud is washed off and the fabric is dried, the process is complete.
The entire procedure is manual, involving anywhere from a dozen to several dozen steps depending on the desired style and intensity. It also requires exposure to the intense summer sun. The river mud must be washed multiple times. Consequently, each roll of Xiangyunsha is limited in quantity, typically no more than ten to twenty meters. Due to the manual nature of the process, the fabric must be cut into shorter lengths to accommodate these numerous steps.
The entire sun-drying process for Xiangyunsha is intricate, involving steps such as: raw silk refining – soaking in *Shuliang* juice – drying – repeating the soaking and drying process multiple times – boiling the silk – washing and drying the *Shuliang* juice multiple times – boiling again – washing and drying the *Shuliang* juice multiple times again – boiling once more – drying – applying river mud – washing – drying – misting – stretching – and finally warehousing. The entire sun-drying process involves "three washes, nine boils, and eighteen sun-dries," totaling dozens of steps.
It is precisely for this reason that each piece of Xiangyunsha is unique, much like the leaves in a vast forest; no two are alike. The handmade traces are evident, with irregular crackling patterns on the fabric surface. It feels smooth yet resilient, and exceptionally cool against the skin. Like a Zisha teapot, it benefits from human touch; the more it is worn, the softer and more skin-friendly it becomes, and its luster intensifies. In past eras, a new Xiangyunsha garment would often be entrusted to a "servant" to be nurtured for a period, until it became translucent, lustrous, and softer, before being worn by its owner.
Colored *lang* is a contemporary modification. The black and brown hues have limitations in use, which led to the development of various colored *lang*, including red, purple, and a spectrum of other colors, as well as numerous prints. Currently, black is my most favored. I once used a black-blue variant, but have since exclusively continued with black. This involves an additional black dyeing process on top of the AB-colored base, creating a double-sided black effect with different sheens. The river mud-dyed side exhibits a superior luster and texture, while the reverse side has a matte finish.
A petite and sharp little shirt. The V-neckline creates a V-shape at both the front and back, with an opening size that is just right, ensuring no worries about exposure. The back neckline also has a subtle V-shape, maintaining a sense of decorum. Raglan sleeves offer a simple and clean connection at the shoulders, falling just below the elbow for a cool and neat finish. A piece of floral fabric is subtly attached inside the cuff, meant to be revealed when the cuff is turned up.
The boxy silhouette and cropped length create a spacious feel. A seam runs down the back, with white stitching that intentionally complements the main body of the trousers. Designed to be paired with wide-leg trousers.
Care Instructions:
Hand wash gently; do not machine wash. Xiangyunsha requires specific care. Slight color bleeding when first washed is normal. Do not soak; rinse once in clean water. Avoid laundry detergent; a small amount of baby bath wash can be used as a substitute. Do not machine wash, rub vigorously, or wring. Do not expose to direct sunlight. Please refer to the care label attached to the garment for specific instructions. Xiangyunsha fabrics boast rich variations due to the manual production process, which prevents technological uniformity. Therefore, variations in color depth, crackling patterns (present on every piece), luster intensity, and color differences may occur to varying degrees.
