He served in the Imperial Painting Academy during the Xianfeng era (mid-19th century). He excelled at portraiture and was also skilled in painting flowers, birds, and landscapes. His reputation as a painter was very high; Empress Dowager Cixi once bestowed upon him a plaque inscribed with her own hand, "Master of Capturing Likeness." This painting is one piece from the "Twelve Flower Deities" series. Executed in color, it depicts a peony and a root-bearing orchid, both emerging diagonally from the left edge of the frame, dancing in the wind.
