The Time of Edgar Degas
In the 1870s, Degas joined the Impressionist group of young painters, creating together and challenging the conservative official art exhibitions and the rigid academic art concepts. However, Degas never acknowledged himself as an "Impressionist." In fact, his social observations and humanistic reflections were deeper than those of his Impressionist contemporaries. While the Impressionist circle celebrated the vibrant bustle of modern cities, Degas quickly perceived the alienation, loneliness, and desolation of people amidst this urban splendor.
