Rare Vintage Weiss Clip-On Earrings, 1960s Made in USA Extremely rare vintage clip-on earrings with Aurora Borealis crystals by Albert Weiss & Co., produced in the 1960s. Similar round "doughnut" clip-on earrings with crystals of all shades were Weiss best-sellers. What makes this pair so unique is the shape - they are oval not round. The history behind the creation of the Aurora Borealis crystals (also known as "Northern Light») The idea of multicolored crystals belonged to Christian Dior, who wanted his ladies to shine literally from heads to toes. Dior wanted to use crystals not only for jewelry but in his haute couture dresses as well. In 1955 Manfred Swarovski, a son of the founder of Swarovski Co, developed polychrome crystal technology specially for Dior. The crystals were covered with the very thin layer of metal oxides, creating an iridescent rainbow. A special skill was required to obtain crystals of specific unusual shades.
