In his early years, he studied Chinese painting and watercolor with Chen Ying-sheng, and also learned painting from Cai Xue-xi. Later, he studied with Xiang Yuan Gu-tong. He focused on sketching, especially his observations of Taiwan's trees and rocks, and used rich gouache to express the unique local scenery, which made him shine in the official art exhibitions before the war.
