This is an oversized stole made from organic cotton gauze, plant-dyed using traditional sappanwood and lac dyes, offering a gentle touch against the skin. This iteration, released since our last offering, features a more pronounced reddish hue, hence its listing as "Sappanwood and Lac Dye_2." While it appears brighter when exposed to light, the plant-based dyeing results in a beautifully subdued, natural color. It has settled into a deep, grape-like color reminiscent of autumn. Dimensions are approximately 95cm x 190cm (including about 1cm fringe), weighing 78g. Sappanwood is a dye derived from the heartwood of a tree, imported to Japan during the Asuka period. It was historically used to dye the robes of court nobles and also served as a medicinal herb, traditionally aiding women. Lac dye is a refined resinous extract from the lac insect. In traditional Chinese medicine, it has been used as a hemostatic and antibacterial agent, and it has a long history of human use as a dye. Being lightweight and large, folding and layering it deepens the color further. Draped loosely, it allows light to pass through, offering a bright and refreshing feel. The fabric, a custom-woven organic cotton gauze (Chita Momen) used even for baby items, has been hand-dyed. Repeated washing before and after dyeing ensures an exceptionally soft texture. It provides a refreshing and gentle feel that soothes the skin. When folded, it becomes compact, perfect for wrapping around your neck for warmth on colder days, or even as a lap blanket.
