The term "Mabe" originates from Japan, with Mabe pearl cultivation tracing back over 100 years to Amami Oshima Island. Before the advent of successful artificial seed-gathering techniques for mother-of-pearl oysters, Mabe pearl oysters were scarce. It was only after the Japanese company Tasaki perfected Mabe pearl cultivation that they became widely available. Their rare beauty has led some to call them "dream pearls." When harvested, the pearl is removed along with a portion of the shell wall.
