**|Q&A|**
**How many types of Taiwanese Cypress are there? What's the difference between Yellow Cypress and Red Cypress?**
There are only seven species in the *Chamaecyparis* genus worldwide, commonly known as "Cypress." These are distributed in North America, Japan, and Taiwan. During the Ice Age, cypress species native to the north migrated to Taiwan. As temperatures rose, they gradually formed high-altitude settlements and differentiated into Taiwanese Cypress (*Chamaecyparis obtusa var. formosana*, or Yellow Cypress) and Taiwanese Red Cypress (*Chamaecyparis formosensis*), collectively referred to as "Taiwanese Cypress." Although they often grow together in primeval forests at altitudes of 1800-2500 meters, in terms of DNA relatedness, Taiwanese Yellow Cypress is closer to Japanese Cypress (*Chamaecyparis obtusa*, also known as Hinoki), while Taiwanese Red Cypress is closer to Sawara Cypress (*Chamaecyparis pisifera*). This is why when Japanese scholars first discovered Yellow Cypress, they considered it a "Taiwanese variant" of Japanese Cypress (only recognized as a distinct species in 1933). During the Japanese colonial era, Yellow Cypress was called "Taiwan Hinoki," and Red Cypress was called "Beniki"—names still used in Taiwan's timber industry today. While they share similar aromatic compounds, their scent compositions differ. For instance, "Hinokitiol," abundant in Taiwanese Cypress, is almost non-existent in Japanese Cypress. Approximately 70-80% of the aromatic substances in Yellow and Red Cypress essential oils are the same, but differences in their proportions and other components create distinct olfactory experiences: **Yellow Cypress, which grows more slowly, has a rich and penetrating woody aroma with a slight cooling and spicy sensation. Red Cypress, containing components like Myrtenol, has a gentler, mellow fragrance with a hint of fruity afternotes.**
**Can the Classic Cypress Essential Oil Rollerball be used for assisting head massages? Can it be used on the entire face or eye area? Can pregnant women or infants use it?**
Our rollerball bottles contain a blend of natural pure essential oils with a refreshing, non-greasy, and spreadable base oil, suitable for localized massage or skin conditioning. For assisting head massages, apply to the temples, philtrum, brow bone, behind the ears, and the nape of the neck, then gently massage with fingertips or a gua sha tool. As the essential oil concentration is higher than typical massage oils, we do not recommend using it around the eye area or for extensive facial oil massage, especially for those with sensitive, oily, or acne-prone skin. It is also recommended to avoid use on infants under two years old. The Classic Cypress Rollerball has gentle, natural ingredients, and pregnant women can generally use it. If you have concerns, consult your doctor first. For those with sensitive skin, test with a small amount first. If discomfort occurs, discontinue use and rinse with clean water. Additionally, pure essential oils (not in rollerball form) are not suitable for direct, extensive skin massage; to avoid irritation, dilute them with a carrier oil.
