Saisiyat Thunder Goddess Motif Woven Band Fisherman's Hat

In Saisiyat mythology, "Wa'on," the daughter of the Thunder God, descended to teach the people agricultural techniques. Wa'on is a crucial deity in Saisiyat tradition, bringing seeds from the heavens and instructing the Saisiyat, who were unfamiliar with cultivation, on how to farm and imparting agricultural skills. After Wa'on imparted her knowledge and returned to the sky, lightning struck. Women skilled in weaving among the Saisiyat used the imagery of lightning, combined with their weaving expertise, to create a motif as a commemoration. They meticulously wove the pattern depicting two intersecting bolts of lightning in the sky. The "Thunder Goddess" pattern (hinobi:wa'on) symbolizes her teachings and protection. The swastika symbol represents the Thunder Goddess, signifying lightning. The wavy lines (^^^) represent the Sea Goddess (Weaver Goddess), who taught our people the art of weaving. The diamond shape (⬦) signifies the dwelling place of ancestral spirits.
