It typically has a spherical shape and is deep green or grey-green in color. Mature plants often develop offsets. Its root system is fibrous, and it has 2-8 spines with tubercles along the ribs. The most distinctive feature of the Saint Bernard cactus is its subtly cracked surface, resembling a smooth dumpling adorned with a few spines. It usually has fewer ribs, with 5 ribs being its characteristic feature, though variations with 4 or 3 ribs exist. Fewer ribs generally signify greater rarity and value, thus commanding a higher price. This particular specimen, with its rare four ribs, is priced accordingly. The most common variety has 5 ribs; those with more than 5 ribs are more likely to be hybrids. | Care Tips | The Saint Bernard cactus thrives in full sun or partial shade and should be placed in a well-ventilated area, planted in a well-draining medium. Summer is its growing season, during which watering should be ample. In winter, reduce or cease watering. Cacti in the Eriosyce genus generally require a good amount of fertilizer to promote growth. This genus is known for its good root development and robust growth. Varieties that produce offsets can be easily propagated from these new shoots. However, new species are also frequently cultivated through seed sowing, with seedlings emerging in about 3-4 weeks. Some species may take 1-2 years to flower, and most species are not self-pollinating, though fruit develops well after artificial pollination. During summer, the soil should be kept moist, with partial shading and enhanced ventilation.
