In 1801, British scholar Thomas Young first studied human perception of color. He proposed that by selecting three primary colors of light with sufficient separation and combining them in different proportions, almost any color could be produced within the visible spectrum. Turner infused his landscape paintings with personal interpretations, making the depiction of light, air, and water his specialty. This personalized approach to landscape eventually influenced Claude Monet, the "Father of Impressionism," inspiring his renowned work "Impression, Sunrise." Turner's art not only redefined landscape painting but also laid a crucial foundation for the development of Post-Impressionism. --------- Turner's talent was recognized early by the art world, affording him the financial means to fully express his unique style. Consequently, his later works focused on light on water, skies, and flames, gradually moving away from literal representation and paving the way for Impressionist theory. His early works employed more traditional techniques. However, in his later period, he integrated watercolor techniques into his oil painting, capturing the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. It is said that he once had himself tied to the mast of a ship in a storm to experience the intensity of the tempest firsthand. In his later years, his oil paintings became more transparent, using thin layers of color to convey pure light effects. In "Rain, Steam and Speed – The Great Western Railway," the outlines of objects are almost indistinguishable. The intense color palette and transient interplay of light and shadow not only placed Turner among the foremost British painters but also significantly influenced later French Impressionist painters, particularly Claude Monet, who studied his techniques with considerable detail.
