In 1971, when Hungarian zoologist Valerius Geist landed on Pinta Island, the vegetation the tortoises relied upon had already been devastated by introduced goats. Only one Pinta Island tortoise remained on the island. This male tortoise was named "Lonesome George" and was housed at the research station of the Darwin Foundation, where he was kept with two female tortoises from the Isabella Island in hopes of reproduction. However, despite laying two clutches of eggs, none successfully hatched.
