This piece is crafted using baleen from a fin whale, sourced from stocks that existed before commercial whaling was banned in the 1980s. The design is inspired by the tail of a whale. When worn in the hair, it creates the impression of a whale gently lifting its tail above the surface of the sea. Whale baleen has properties similar to human fingernails or traditional tortoiseshell: it is flexible, durable, and resilient. Its natural warmth allows it to hold hair gently yet securely. Fin whale baleen, now unavailable due to the global ban on whaling, is an extremely rare material, and this piece is made from remaining vintage stock from the whaling era.
