It is the largest and most nobly feathered bird among all Taiwanese species, hence its selection as the "national bird." In 1906, British zoologist Walter Goodfellow was studying birds in Alishan when he observed indigenous people adorning their hair with two beautiful pheasant tail feathers. Goodfellow brought these feathers back to Britain.
