Vegetable tanning is the earliest tanning method, using tanning agents extracted from plants, such as tannins. This tanning process involves repeatedly immersing the leather in tanning solutions of varying concentrations, taking one to two months. Vegetable-tanned leather does not contain harmful chemical components like heavy metals and can come into direct contact with skin, while also retaining the leather's natural texture. Over time, with exposure to sunlight and moisture, the leather will gradually develop a lustrous sheen and deepen in color, showing unique marks of use.
