He studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and also trained in the private school of Kiyokata Kaburagi, a traditional master of Japanese painting who was closely associated with the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo. His studio later became a "talent pool" for Watanabe to discover promising young artists, and many artists eager to work under Watanabe emerged from here. Ito became one of Watanabe's artists. From the 1920s (his first work appeared in 1922) through the 1930s and into the post-war era, he created approximately 50 landscape prints for the Watanabe publishing house. Watanabe regarded Takashi Ito as one of his "high-class" designers, alongside Kawase Hasui and Ito Shinsui, whose works were mostly published in Oban (large) or even larger formats. Ito's landscape prints possess a profound sense of romantic solitude, reminiscent of 19th-century German painting and printmaking. Like Kawase Hasui, he rarely included many figures in his compositions, lending his works a mysterious and melancholic atmosphere. Ito's printmaking style differs from the flat, monochrome application often seen in Ukiyo-e. He extensively utilized color gradations, and his brushwork effects are closer to painting than traditional woodblock prints. Achieving this effect required extremely skilled carvers and printers. Provides overall composition, figure, and landscape design. Example: Hokusai Katsushika, Hiroshige Utagawa, Hasui Kawase. 2️⃣ Publisher (版元, Hanmoto / Publisher) The core of the entire team, akin to a "Producer + Distributor." Finances and plans the work, decides on themes and collaborates with artists. Hires carvers and printers, manages progress and quality. Responsible for sales and promotion, determines print run. Example: Watanabe Shozaburo during the Shin-Hanga movement. 3️⃣ Carver (彫師, Hōshi / Block Carver) Transfers the artist's draft onto woodblocks. Each color requires a dedicated woodblock. Requires extremely high technical skill, precise to the millimeter, otherwise color registration will be misaligned. 4️⃣ Printer (摺師, Surishi / Printer) Uses woodblocks and pigments to print the image layer by layer onto Japanese paper. Responsible for color intensity, gradation (ぼかし), and light/shadow effects.
