He served in the Imperial Painting Academy during the Xianfeng era (mid-19th century). He excelled at portraiture and was also skilled in painting flowers, birds, and landscapes. His reputation as an artist was high, and Empress Dowager Cixi once bestowed upon him a plaque inscribed with "Master of Capturing Likeness" in her own hand. This painting is one installment from the "Twelve Months of Flower Gods" series. It is rendered in color, depicting a peony and a root-bare orchid, both emerging diagonally from the left edge of the frame, dancing in the breeze. Shen's floral paintings often feature rich colors.
