We often receive questions about how 《freehand embroidery》 differs from standard machine embroidery. Regular machine embroidery involves a machine reading a design and automatically stitching it, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical patterns. In contrast, 《freehand embroidery》 is an artisanal skill where the craftsperson manually moves the fabric while stitching the design. Because it is human-made, each piece possesses a unique character. No two embroidered designs are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that closely resembles hand-embroidery. The process involves transferring a sketch onto the fabric and meticulously stitching while referring to the original artwork, coordinating with the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle – a truly remarkable craft that is impressive even to imagine. Currently, there are fewer than 400 individuals in Vietnam who can perform freehand embroidery. Among them, only about 50 can do so professionally. Furthermore, a mere 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Of these, only 10 are capable of executing the intricate designs required by Pangandaran. However, exceptional skill alone is not enough; embroidery also demands a keen sense of aesthetics. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression. Therefore, at Pangandaran, we entrust our work to Hun, who possesses the highest level of skill. Hun, currently 46 years old, has been embroidering since the age of 15, bringing 31 years of dedicated experience to her craft. Moreover, she has an exceptional artistic sensibility, earning our complete trust. With Vietnam's ongoing economic development, traditional crafts, like many others, face challenging circumstances. Since 2000, the number of people able to perform freehand embroidery has rapidly declined, and there are virtually no young individuals learning this technique today. It is anticipated that the number of artisans will continue to decrease, and Vietnam's freehand embroidery faces a precarious future, potentially disappearing within the next decade or so.
