Glazes bestow upon ceramic art a beautiful, transformative outer layer, serving as the soul of the piece and one of the languages employed by creators. Glazes that developed and flourished in different eras reflect the artistic styles and aesthetic values of those periods. On the level of craftsmanship, glazes also encompass scientific knowledge and even the influences of politics and economics within contemporary history.
As the first museum dedicated to ceramics, the Yingge Ceramics Museum in New Taipei City is committed to a research-based approach, continuously moving towards promotion, education, in-depth cultivation, and documentation of local culture. It strives to build the breadth and depth of ceramic art research, painstakingly constructing Taiwan's ceramic artistry step by step, enhancing people's appreciation for life aesthetics and their ability to appreciate art, and sowing seeds for the future of ceramic art.
In recent years, the museum has launched a series of special exhibitions with ceramic glazes as the theme, including painted ceramics, celadon, blue and white porcelain, and black and white pottery, culminating in the 2024 "Flowing Light – Plant Ash Glaze Special Exhibition." This series of exhibitions is rich in knowledge, artistry, and relevance to daily life, showcasing the historical development of ceramics and outstanding works. It systematically introduces ceramic culture and art pieces to the public, gradually establishing a research discourse originating from Taiwan.
The "Flowing Light – Plant Ash Glaze Special Exhibition" continues the theme of ceramic glazes. Building upon the museum's publication, "Ash Glaze – The Story and Application of Plant Ash," a compilation of Master Hsueh Jui-Fang's years of research, the exhibition transforms this knowledge into a multifaceted presentation of plant ash glazes. It particularly focuses on Taiwanese plant ash glaze creations, while also providing a comprehensive overview of plant ash glazes, including their history in East Asia and methods of production.
This exhibition brings together the works of multiple Taiwanese ceramic artists, presenting the "Flowing Light – Plant Ash Glaze Special Exhibition" as an artistic feast that is both informative and aesthetically pleasing. It invites viewers into the world of plant ash glazes, highlighting the connection between daily life and art. The exhibition encourages micro-level contemplation within a macro perspective, offering an accessible introduction to ash glazes from different eras and types, thereby bringing this ancient, enduring glaze color to life. Children and the general public can enjoy and understand how ceramic art is not distant from our lives, and gain a deeper appreciation for Taiwanese ceramic creations.
