Gymnocalycium riojense, commonly known as Three-Spined Gymnocalycium, belongs to the Cactaceae family. It is characterized by its flattened, grey-green spherical body. Its most distinctive feature is the presence of only three spines on each areole. The ribs develop slightly raised tubercles centered on the areoles. The flowers are predominantly white. Once the plant reaches a certain size, it may grow offsets. Propagation can be done through offsets and seeds.
The Gymnocalycium genus thrives in tropical, subtropical, and grassland climates with minimal rainfall, intense sunlight, and high temperatures. The optimal growing temperature is between 20 - 35°C. Growth slows down and dormancy begins when temperatures fall below 10°C or exceed 35°C. A well-ventilated environment with low humidity is ideal. Avoid damp conditions and waterlogged soil.
Information about the Three-Spined Gymnocalycium is scarce online due to its rarity. It has a charming and distinctively handsome appearance, making it a favorite among designers!
Watering
Water approximately once every 7 days in summer and reduce watering to about once every 10 days in winter. The general rule is to water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot if ventilation is poor.
Sunlight
Gymnocalycium varieties are plants that thrive in direct sun and UV exposure, requiring ample sunlight for growth and flowering. They can be placed on a shaded balcony or in a garden outdoors. However, during hot summer months, prolonged direct sun exposure should be avoided. In such cases, move them to a shaded or cooler spot to prevent damage from high temperatures.
Soil
Gymnocalycium plants grow best in fertile, gravelly, water-permeable soil with a pH of 6-7. A common cultivation mix is 60% succulent soil + 20% peat moss + 20% sandy soil.
The roots of Gymnocalycium are highly sensitive to lack of oxygen. If the soil has poor aeration and inadequate drainage, root rot can occur. To maintain soil breathability, repot annually to loosen the soil.
📝 Key Points: Drought-tolerant, loves sunlight, water thoroughly when dry. Water approximately once every 7 days in summer and every 10 days in winter with reduced watering.

⚠️ Please note: Due to the nature of handmade cement casting, slight air bubbles and pores are inevitable. Each planter has unique textures, patterns, and pores, which are considered part of the design as long as they do not affect structural integrity. If you are very concerned about variations in the appearance of cement products, please consider carefully or contact us to inquire before purchasing. No returns or exchanges will be accepted after the sale.
