When I first took Kogin embroidery classes, my teacher's initial assignment was to make a drawstring pouch. The pouch I made as a complete beginner was usable, but naturally, it had a plethora of minor flaws I could point out. Now, the pouches I create can finally pass my own quality control. Practice truly does lead to improvement ̮̈♡ This time, I've used cherished Japanese cat fabric to create a pouch, enhanced with the traditional "Neko no Managu" (cat's eye) motif from Kogin embroidery. For cleaning, hand washing inside out is recommended, or machine washing inside a laundry bag. **[ The Story of Kogin Embroidery ]** Kogin embroidery is an embroidery technique originating from the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture, Japan. During the late Edo period, under the sumptuary law "Noka Kensetsu Bunrenrei" (which restricted the extravagance of farmers), commoners were prohibited from using cotton fabric. However, clothing made from hemp fabric couldn't withstand the long, snowy, and damp climate of the Tohoku region. Thus, farmers began threading yarn through the gaps in hemp fabric to improve insulation, strengthen the cloth, and this eventually led to the development of "Kogin embroidery." Embroidery requires counting the warp threads of the fabric (simply put, counting the squares) and executing straight stitches row by row. If even one square is stitched incorrectly, the entire piece must be unraveled and redone. Therefore, every stitch in Kogin embroidery is a test of eyesight and patience, a craft that demands meticulousness and dedication.
