Cypress essential oil is a strong and uniquely aromatic essential oil obtained by steam distillation from the needles or wood and bark of selected cypress species.
Cypress is a plant that inspired ancient imaginations, imbued with spirituality and enduring cultural symbolism. Its scent is woody, with smoky and dry, or green and earthy nuances, known to suit men's fragrances.
Cypress essential oil comes from several coniferous evergreen plants of the Cupressaceae plant family, members of which are naturally distributed in the warm temperate and subtropical regions of Asia, Europe, and North America. Known for their dark foliage, conical shape, and small yellow flowers, cypress trees typically grow to approximately 25-30 meters (approximately 80-100 feet) tall, growing in a pyramidal shape especially when they are young.
Cypress is said to have originated in ancient Persia, Syria or Cyprus and was brought to the Mediterranean region by Etruscan tribes. In the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean, the cypress tree acquired spiritual connotations and became a symbol of death and mourning. Because of their towering height and unique shape, these trees also symbolize immortality and hope; this can be seen in the Greek word "Sempervirens," which means "alive forever." The symbolic value of this tree was also recognized in the ancient world.
The Etruscans believed it warded off the smell of death, just as they believed the tree warded off evil spirits and often planted it around cemeteries. A sturdy material, the ancient Egyptians used cypress wood to carve coffins and decorate sarcophagi, while the ancient Greeks used it to carve statues of their gods. Throughout the ancient world, carrying cypress branches was a widely used sign of respect for the dead.
Cypress essential oil used in aromatherapy is known for its strong, woody scent, which helps clear airways and promotes deep, relaxing breathing. It is further thought to have an energizing and refreshing effect on mood, while helping to maintain emotional stability.
Cypress essential oil adds a wonderful woody aromatic appeal to natural perfumes or aromatherapy blends and is an attractive addition to men's fragrances. It can be combined with other woody notes such as cedar, juniper, pine, sandalwood and Silver fir to create fresh forest formulas. Also combines beautifully with spicy cardamom and resinous frankincense or myrrh for a strong sensory synergy. Or use it with bergamot, clary sage, geranium, jasmine, lavender, lemon, myrtle, orange, rose, rosemary or tea tree essential oils.
*If you want to apply pure natural essential oils to the skin, it is recommended to use vegetable oils such as jojoba oil and sweet almond oil, dilute it into a skin-friendly massage oil and then apply it.
