The Wuyuanjiao Lighthouse, formerly known as Xiyu Tower Light, is located at the southwestern tip of Wuyuanjiao Island in Penghu County. According to the "Xiyu Tower Light Stele Record," the Xiyu Tower Light was first built in 1778 during the Qing Dynasty. It was a seven-tiered stone pagoda in the style of a Buddhist stupa, where the abbot of the temple would light a lamp at the top every dusk. It is one of the oldest lighthouses in Taiwan. Later, due to frequent typhoons and weak illumination over the years, a British engineer was commissioned in 1874 to plan and construct a Western-style lighthouse. The Xiyu Tower Light was rebuilt with a cylindrical cast-iron tower body, painted white, and equipped with three cast-iron fog cannons. Construction began on July 11, 1875, during the first year of the Guangxu reign, and was completed in November of the same year. It was officially named the "Wuyuanjiao Lighthouse."
